AC Blowing Warm Air? 7 Causes (3 You Can Check Right Now)

The system's running, air's coming out of the vents — but it's warm. In an Augusta summer that's a five-alarm problem. Here are the seven most common causes, starting with the ones you can check yourself in five minutes.

Check These First (Free)

1. Thermostat settings

Sounds silly, happens constantly — especially in homes where someone "adjusted" it. Confirm it's on COOL set at least 3–4° below room temp, and the fan is on AUTO, not ON. Fan ON blows uncooled air between cycles.

2. The air filter

A filter choked with pine pollen restricts airflow until the coil ices over — and a frozen coil blows warm-ish, weak air. If you can't remember the last change, it's due. In Augusta summers, monthly is the rule.

3. The outdoor unit

Walk outside. Is the condenser fan spinning? Is the unit humming? If it's silent, check the disconnect and the breaker. If it's running but the air off the top isn't warm, the compressor isn't pumping — that's a pro call.

Causes That Need a Pro

4. Failed capacitor

The most common failure in Georgia. The compressor and fan can't start without it. Often you'll hear a hum or see the fan twitch. It's a $150–$350 fix — cheap, fast, and brutal to ignore (it can kill the compressor).

5. Refrigerant leak

Low refrigerant = warm air plus, often, ice on the copper lines. Refrigerant doesn't "run out" — if it's low, it leaked. Proper repair means finding and fixing the leak, then recharging to spec.

6. Frozen evaporator coil

Restricted airflow or low refrigerant turns the indoor coil into a block of ice. Turn cooling OFF and fan ON to thaw, then call — the ice is a symptom, not the disease.

7. Compressor failure

The worst case. If the compressor's dead, you're usually choosing between a $1,800–$3,200 repair on an older unit and putting that money toward replacement. We'll show you both numbers.

Fastest path: turn the system off, check the three free items, then call (888) 217-1674. Most warm-air calls in Augusta are same-day fixes.
